History:
CR AU (Optional): It is not a DWRP CRAU, but it should be noted that she is from the crossover sequel to the original trilogy, Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. The sequel seems to take place right after the third game and before Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney.

Personality:
Just: Maya is by far the most open-hearted person in the series, often helping jaded Phoenix Wright connecting with the wacky and absurd defendants who need his help. Despite her openness to others, she isn't impervious to fear and she's a bit of a crybaby, unafraid to show her emotions or to tremble. Even still, Maya is never truly immobilized by that fear when Justice is on the line. She gathers herself up as best she can, and continues to face the road ahead.

One of the silliest examples we see in the original canon of this is when Phoenix's impersonator terrifies the courtroom with a loud roar, —Maya gets so spooked, she hides under the defense's bench! But just a few lines later she's right back by Phoenix's side, helping him sort out the contradictions in their witness's testimony. However, we also see a more serious example when Manfred Von Karma threatens Phoenix and Maya during Edgeworth's trial. They came to collect evidence that would incriminate them and Von Karma was ready to steal it from them, prepared with a taser. Maya attempts to protect the evidence from Von Karma only to be tased to the point of losing consciousness. And even before this, Maya gets herself held in contempt of court holding Lotta Hart responsible when the reporter gets caught up in her own excitement and starts misinforming the judge.

An even more dramatic example occurs right before her canonpoint in Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney; after being held in a cage over a deep pit of fire for hours (during which she has had the chance to express her fear of falling into the fire below), Maya is cleared of the accusation that she is a witch, and is left contemplating the fairness of her fate as another girl comes to take her place. That girl, Espella, intended to sacrifice herself to stop all witch trials and prevent any other girls from dying as a result, but Maya decides then and there that isn't fair. As she is wheeled away from Espella, Maya jumps across the flaming pit to the cage, declaring that this fate isn't right; she helps Espella swing to a chandelier and escape, trapping herself in the iron cage once more as a result. She ends up plummeting into the fire and to what she believes is her doom, but even later when she is safe, she doesn't regret her actions.

When what she considers Justice is on the line, Maya will always act bravely and without care for her own being, and her sense of justice is strong. She is a very just person.

Self-Abandoning: ...however, the scope of that justice extends to every single person except herself. After being raised by an aunt that degraded her and constantly told her she was undeserving of everything, Maya internalized that lack of self-importance. She always views the people around her as more accomplished, more deserving, more hard-working— everything, because her own efforts aren't seen as worth anything. She isn't resentful about it; she simply cannot conceptualize of her own contributions to anything as having value.

As a result, Maya doesn't have her own hopes or dreams. She does have interests and hobbies— little activities that she drags Phoenix to help her do, knowing that in the future she might lack the option to have fun that way. But she's already resigned herself to her fate; she will be the leader of Kurain, even though she doesn't actually want to be. She willingly and eagerly accepted the role, though, to give her sister, Mia, the freedom to leave the village and become a lawyer to clear their disgraced mother's name. It's a leadership that is mired with distrust, that has led to several family members resenting her, and is much more of a burden than it is a privilege.

So when it comes to big decisions, Maya often compromises her own outcome for others. She prioritizes the survival of others with little regard for her own, throwing herself into dangerous situations for others. She gets herself in trouble defending others. She devotes herself to Phoenix's wellbeing instead of her own, eagerly accepting the role of sidekick to emphasize his heroism. But in her first few court cases, it's hard for her to defend herself when accused, finding it easier to fight back for the sake of her beloved cousin Pearl or for Phoenix than for herself. When accused by Luke Triton of being a witch, Maya's pain is for him and his loss of Professor Layton, and she never acts as though she's been betrayed, forgiving him before he even apologizes.

Brazen: with the definition as behaving 'with apparent confidence and lack of shame', Maya certainly fits the bill. Between her commitment to justice and commitment to the bit, she can be brash and say whatever's on her mind, whether it's an assertive defense of someone or a her idea of a Great Goof. In context of the games it's gotten her in trouble several times; sometimes it's as simple as a joke not going over well with the others, or as deep as her getting held in contempt of court for not stopping her questioning when told to, or as dangerous as Labyrinthia's prosecuting Knights threatening to drop her into the pit of fire if she continued to speak during the trial. And on a more harmless level, Maya's shamelessness extends to keep her even funnier for the player; she's unafraid to flirt, unafraid to make jokes, unafraid to be silly even when the moment seems serious.

In context of other games I've played her in, it's been an interesting source of contention with others, too. Other characters have taken her playful attitude and quickness to be silly as her not taking them seriously or not taking the situation seriously, and became insulted that she would treat them as a joke whether or not they realize she's the joke herself. At other times, Maya's assertive speech and actions in the faces of characters much more powerful than her has led to her being deeply harmed or even killed.

And both sides of the spectrum— the playful assertiveness and the justice-driven— have led to other characters questioning Maya's sensibility most of all, both in canon and in roleplay settings. Kind of like your average shounen anime protagonist, Maya makes others question if she has any sense at all. They struggle to take her seriously, or sometimes even end up feeling like the way she makes herself the joke means she doesn't take their concerns and care for her seriously.

Avoidant: Likely because of the isolationist nature of Kurain, Maya isn't easily forthcoming about her family situation, her own problems, or her deeper feelings. She's certainly expressive about surface feelings, being a bit of a crybaby almost for fun and almost never holding back from her positive expressions now that she's left her village for the first time. However, when it comes to things that more deeply affect her, Maya's fairly reserved and sometimes even pretends she isn't bothered at all.

Even when truly traumatic things happen to her, as soon as they are 'dealt with' (i.e.; the case closes) Maya moves on with her head high, as though she isn't upset. She carries on and takes care of others' feelings, usually Phoenix's and Pearl's, rather than talking about her own. Even after she's admitted on the witness stand that she's afraid to go home and doesn't want to lead Kurain, once the trial is over, Maya puts on a happy face, returns to her regular boisterous personality, and acts brave and happy for Pearl, insisting on cheering Pearl up rather than sitting in or expressing her own pain. It's an act that even frustrates Phoenix at first, leading Edgeworth to explain that she's doing it to be strong for Pearl.

But even if she does it to be strong, it means that Maya is one of the few characters who never really gets to deal with her pain. She has to put on a bright and brave face to become Phoenix's assistant after nearly being framed for the murder of her own beloved sister. She has to put on a bright and brave face to support Pearl when Pearl's mother tries to frame Maya for the murder of a channeling client. She has to put on a bright and brave face to encourage Phoenix when she's been kidnapped, even when she's almost been killed by a ghost inhabiting her mother's body, even when a man has been turned to gold in front of her and she's been accused of doing it. And each time, this prevents her from ever truly dealing with the pain, anger, betrayal, and rejection she suffers through while the tragedies are happening.

She has the emotions during the trauma, then packs it all up and never addresses it, which in games has only helped to further that feeling from others that Maya doesn't take herself or others seriously.

Powers and Abilities:
I honestly have no idea how it would effectively ever come up but canonically Maya has the ability to channel the dead, specifically by allowing other spirits to inhabit and take control of her physical form. Channelling the dead changes her appearance to that of the person she channels apart from skin tone, hair length/color/style, and clothing.

we are also given some indication that mediums of her study can feel life energy; not in a way that identifies anyone else in any way, simply that she can feel whether or not someone is still alive and specifically is connected to her family spiritually, able to tell that her mother had not passed on yet though they hadn't met in nearly 20 years.
